Medical
Director
Dr Elizabeth Miller AKC, FRCSE, MRCGP. I qualified in
medicine in 1980 from King's College Hospital Medical School. At first, I practised as a
surgeon, including five years as a neurosurgeon. Then, after two years in Accident and
Emergency medicine, I changed to general practice. I have also worked in paediatrics and
obstetric and gynaecology. I finished training as a specialist general practitioner six
years ago. I have two postgraduate memberships (Royal Colleges of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and
General Practice) and I have almost completed a psychology degree with the Open
University. I now work in general practice
because I like people and find hospital medicine can be too remote.

represents many of our beliefs about how medicine should be practised. Patients are partners. Information must be shared equally. A doctor helps interpret this information and
advise accordingly. People who know what is happening to them get better quicker.
There is no magic in the practice of medicine, only knowledge,
skill and experience. It can be understood by anyone who is prepared to take the time.
Nevertheless there are large areas, particularly in psychiatry and mental health, where little is known and there are
no right answers. Here common sense and experience are often the best guides.
I hope you enjoy your visit. I hope that some of
your questions can be answered and that others will lead to interesting debates. Thank you
for reading this and I look forward to meeting you in the chat rooms.
