Healthy
Living
Find out what you need to know
to live healthily, this book covers nutrition exercise and the psychology
of feeling good. This will help you identify the foods you need to eat to
keep yourself healthy and the type of exercise you should do to feel your
best at all times. How
to Eat, Move and Be Healthy by Paul
Chek covers all you need to know
Diet
For my money
(writes Dr Liz Miller) there is just one diet book: Montignac's Dine
Out and Lose Weight. This is well written, aimed at people who like to
eat in restaurants, however the advice and suggested menus can apply to
everyone. Montignac clearly explains the reasons for this style of healthy
eating. In fact eating is explained and you can do plenty of it!
Despite medical scepticism of modern nutritionists, the book agrees with
what I know of physiology and makes biological sense.
There is more to being overweight than eating the wrong diet. There are
also powerful psychological forces involved. Although Susie Orbach's
Fat is a Feminist Issue is written from a female point of view, the
issues involved apply to men and women.
Smoking
Cigarettes are
addictive. Stopping smoking is not easy or is it? Alan Carr's The
easy way to stop smoking changes your beliefs about smoking. After
only one session at one Alan Carr's clinics, over 90% of people stop
smoking. This book contains the secrets of their success. Stop
smoking from conviction, I personally vouch for his methods!

Medicines
British National Formulary (ISBN
0-85369-462-1)
This is the medication bible of UK doctors. When doctors want to know
the correct dose of a drug, whether it interacts with other drugs, whether
it is safe for pregnancy and what are alternatives they use the BNF.
It is clearly written and understood with a minimal medical knowledge. But
beware because it does mention every side effect - however rare. If you
take tablets regularly, or even occasionally then check up with it
Heart
Disease
Fighting Heart Disease Dr Chandra Patel (ISBN
0-83618-165-1)
This is an exceptional book. It gives a clear guide to how the heart
functions and why heart disease can develop. It has a holistic approach,
looking at all aspects of treatment and prevention. If there is heart
disease in your family, or you smoke, then you will find this book
invaluable.
Mental
Health
Mary Copeland's The
Depression Workbook (ISBN
1-879237-32-6)
If your moods seem to difficult to manage, this is a step by step guide
about learning to monitor and control your moods , instead of letting them
control you. The word 'workbook' is not accidental, achieving good mental
health and stable moods is hard work. This book is unique in its field and
is an excellent start to self managing your mental health.
Staying Sane by Dr Raj Persaud
This is good common sense advice about looking after your
mental health. As our lives become more stressful and more chaotic, this
approach becomes more important. The book covers the latest research in
both psychology (study of the normal individual) and psychiatry (study of
the troubled person). Furthermore it provides some fascinating insights
into people and why we behave as we do.
